Is Facebook’s move into financial services an opportunity for fintechs?

Libra is a new global currency. Having your own currency sounds like you’re a Central Bank. Having a digital wallet sounds like you’re offering a bank account; with 2.5 billion customers via Facebook, Libra will scale very quickly.

Then there are Libra’s partners – Uber, Paypal etc… who will use Libra as the medium of exchange no doubt.

What does Libra mean for fintechs? And the banks? Are there opportunities to work with Libra and Calibre and develop great new services in the Libra eco-system?

Facebook will soon launch Libra, a cryptocurrency and a digital wallet; see their news announcement here: https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2019/06/coming-in-2020-calibra/

Facebook has billions of customers – FX transactions (foreign exchange, remittances or cross border payments) between friends and family all over the world would be an obvious start; and why wouldn’t they offer credit cards, unsecured loans, or mortgages? Businesses next? Facebook has the distribution, now it’s building the technology to be a de-facto bank…

This panel will discuss the ideas, trends, challenges and opportunities behind the Libra and Calibra venture.

Panel members:

Tim Lea, Founder & CEO, Fractonium.com (Confirmed)
Jonathan Mogg, Risk, Capital and Future Markets, XINJA (Confirmed)
Stuart Reynolds, Partner, Fullstack Advisory (Confirmed)
